Supporting Your Nervous System: How TRE® Helps Teens Manage Stress and Big Emotions

By Sara Clark www.saraclark.ca

Who you are and your nervous system is doing a lot of work behind the scenes.

TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) is a gentle, body‑based method that helps teens release stress and reconnect with a sense of calm. It’s simple, empowering, and designed to support the body’s natural ability to regulate itself.

What Is TRE®?

TRE® is a series of easy exercises that activate your body’s natural shaking or “tremoring” response — a built‑in way the nervous system releases tension. This shaking is not scary or dramatic. It’s your body’s way of letting go of stress it has been holding onto.

  • Natural stress release — TRE® taps into the body’s instinctive ability to calm itself.

  • Nervous system regulation — tremors help shift the body out of fight‑or‑flight.

  • Accessible for teens — no special equipment, no experience needed.

  • Body‑led healing — you stay in control the entire time.

TRE® is used around the world to support stress, anxiety, overwhelm, and emotional regulation — all things teens commonly navigate.

Why TRE® Helps During the Teen Years

Adolescence is a time when emotions feel bigger, stress hits harder, and the brain is still developing the skills to cope. TRE® supports teens by:

  • Releasing built‑up tension from school, sports, social pressure, or family stress

  • Improving emotional regulation so big feelings feel less overwhelming

  • Supporting sleep by calming the nervous system

  • Reducing anxiety by helping the body shift out of survival mode

  • Building self‑awareness and confidence in managing stress

TRE® doesn’t require talking about difficult experiences — which can feel safer and more comfortable for many teens.

What TRE® Feels Like

Most teens describe TRE® as:

  • “Relaxing”

  • “Weird at first, but in a good way”

  • “Like my body is letting go of something I didn’t know I was holding”

  • “A reset button for my stress”

The tremors are gentle and controlled. You can stop at any time. You’re always in charge of your experience.

How TRE® Supports Mental Health

TRE® can be especially helpful for teens who experience:

  • Anxiety

  • Overwhelm

  • Sleep difficulties

  • Irritability or mood swings

  • Stress from school or sports

  • Past difficult experiences

Because TRE® works with the body, it helps teens who struggle to put their feelings into words or who feel “stuck” in their stress.

What a TRE® Session Looks Like

A session at with Sara is calm, supportive, and paced gently.

  • We start with a check‑in

  • I guide you through simple movements

  • Your body begins to tremor naturally

  • You stay in control the whole time

  • We end with grounding so you feel settled and safe

TRE® can be done individually or alongside talk therapy, depending on what feels right.

A Message for Teens

You don’t have to carry everything on your own. Your body is wise. It knows how to release stress — sometimes it just needs a little support to remember how.

TRE® is a simple, empowering tool that helps you feel more grounded, more in control, and more connected to yourself.
